Manager, Culture & Engagement Communications

Purpose of role
This position exists to promote effective employee communications within the global BRM organization in order to create an informed, engaged & connected workforce and drive organizational performance. The position will:

  • Marketing & Brand: Define and apply a consistent and compelling vision and approach to integrated HR communications, focusing on the organization’s strategic direction, achievements, and policy related information
  • Storytelling: Create and curate strategic narratives/compelling storylines that connect to company purpose, and employee value proposition
  • Strategic Planning: While contributing to strategic plans for internal communications and tactical execution, it will also develop and facilitate a dialogue with the people who make up the organization to maintain a pulse on employee morale and identify opportunities to drive greater employee engagement
  • Change Management: Under the direction of HR, consult with team members and develop communications strategies that support enterprise-wide change initiatives
  • Innovation & Creativity: Drive innovation by looking for new ways of working, exploring best practices and challenging communication channels in new and effective ways
  • Communications Excellence: Apply persuasive and advanced communications expertise
  • Strategic Advice: Develop strong stakeholder relationships

Accountabilities of role

Employee Communications, Culture, Engagement, and Marketing
  • Contribute to the development of an integrated internal communications strategy that encompasses all of our locations and people globally
  • Under the direction, develop content, lead and execute internal communications projects, measuring effectiveness of employee messaging whenever possible
  • Act as a key HR consultant trusted to understand and manage sensitive communications issues and challenges
  • Manage message development and distribution
  • Develop, implement and maintain the main internal communication channels; lead the development and implementation of new internal communications tools and channels over time
  • In support of HR, provide editorial services including message design and production which may include drafting new material, copy writing, editing or re-working material to conform/align with corporate messaging and visual identity guidelines. Ensure overall messaging consistency across all channels. This will involve working in effective collaboration with a range of participants involved in the drafting and approval processes
  • Establish initial measures by which effectiveness of communications can be evaluated and improved upon
  • Under the direction of HR, collaborate and partner with the the culture committees and events management function as a key consultant to ensure internal communications messaging remains consistent throughout all events and initiatives
  • Collaborate with the Brand team on brand standards & guidelines, to ensure alignment on all aspects of employee communications, recruitment marketing and branding
  • Establish a streamlined method through which HR can share news and updates along with easy access to information and news to build a workplace with open communication and transparency
  • Oversee content management responsibilities for internal SharePoint site
  • In partnership with HR team members and the Events Management function, increase employee awareness, understanding and participation in programs and offerings via the company intranet, corporate website, and other social/digital channels. Collaborate to develop content that champions the employee and company experiences to all internal employees
  • Liaise and cultivate relationships with others in the company to find out about important updates, events, announcements and news and add value on how they can best use communications to engage employees and achieve their objectives
  • Partners closely with the IT Infrastructure team on available technology
  • Contribute to the development of an employee engagement strategy from the perspective of internal communications best practices
  • Assist in the development and recommendation of an annual employee engagement budget to support strategic initiatives
  • Manage and maximize the use of available intranet and social/digital channels to drive effective communication and engender two-way dialogue with people across the company
  • In partnership with business and/or HR, provide project management-based communications support for various initiatives around the employee experience (especially those with an employee engagement component), acquisition/integration, organizational change etc. This may involve producing a schedule of communication objectives and milestones for the project, a map of vital stakeholders, developing a campaign to build support, etc.
  • Work in collaboration with the Recruitment Marketing lead to be aligned on EVP and recruitment marketing messages internally and externally, potentially develop content that can be multi-purpose internally and externally, provide communications input to recruitment tools, where relevant, and develop social media/digital channel strategies that are consistently aligned with the Employee Value Proposition.
  • Develop a platform where staff can ask questions, highlight successes, lean on each other for support or advice
  • Project manage the activities of the culture committees, as well as establishing their meeting cadence, meeting minutes, etc.
  • Support engagement survey initiatives
Must Haves:
  • At least 5 years in a mix of marketing and/or communications roles with a strong link to HR, bringing high level knowledge of communications theory principles and practices to develop communications plans and recommendations with an emphasis on employee communications
  • Experience developing internal-facing communications plans and strategies that inform, inspire and connect with employees
  • A solid understanding of employee engagement and the activities that drive it
  • Excellent written, verbal and inter-personal communication skills
  • Advanced level copy-writing, proof-reading and editorial skills
  • Experience managing content across multiple channels
  • Strong project management skills with a demonstrated ability to plan workflow and deliver results from inception to completion with minimal guidance
  • Strong organizational, prioritizing and planning skills to successfully manage multiple tasks with varying deadlines.  Strong attention to detail; accurate and thorough; comfortable with numbers
  • Basic design skills and/or experience overseeing graphic design partner
  • Ability to communicate well with all levels of management.
  • Ability to partner with managers and leaders to execute programs that deliver employee engagement
  • Ability to work collaboratively to partner with managers and leaders to execute programs that deliver employee engagement
  • Experience managing internal social media platforms and understands how to use and integrate them most effectively into internal communications initiatives
  • Proficiency with computer applications and a solid understanding of various communication platforms, ideally Sharepoint, Microsoft Teams, Slack and social media formats; experience with digital and visual content
  • Undergraduate degree or post-graduate diploma in Communications, Corporate Communications, Journalism or equivalent experience
  • Ideally, experience supporting change management
  • Functions as a self-starter, motivator and consensus builder who takes initiative and exercises judgement
  • Strategic and solutions oriented approach to challenges
  • Able to adapt quickly to changing priorities
